Is Your Air Conditioner Ready for Winter?
Cooler weather is upon us and winter is just around the corner but is your air conditioning unit ready?
Before you turn on your unit, you need to make sure it’s winter-ready. Regular maintenance is a great habit to get into, resulting in a well-functioning system, a healthier home environment and lower energy bills.
The big question with air conditioning maintenance is to DIY or not to DIY?
When it comes to service and cleaning you should always use a licensed specialist to work on your system, however, there are a few things that you can do yourself:
Clean your air filters every month.
This should be done in the summer and winter season to maintain healthy clean air.
Clean or replace air filters: Homeowners should continue to inspect their air filters at least once a month when using their heating system as a dirty filter can overwork the HVAC system and lower energy efficiency.
Check your outdoor unit: Remove any shrubs, plants, or tree branches that may be in close proximity to the unit. Look inside the unit and remove any fallen leaves, debris or dead animals. Ensure that all components are clean and are able to run without interference.
Your air conditioner condenser (outdoor unit) should be free of anything blocking the equipment. Both the condenser and external vents are likely to have attracted some debris including leaves, plants, dirt and animals. These can damage your unit, causing it to run less efficiently. Clear this area monthly.
Check power and controls
Check electrical cords for wear and tear, if they are damaged call a licensed professional to replace them.
When turning on your heater for the first time before winter, you should be able to start, operate, and turn off the system without any issues. If you notice any sounds or smells after turning your heating system on for the first time, you should turn off the system immediately and call a trained HVAC technician to inspect the unit.
